Not
one to keep his talent to himself, you'll find Raso
dishing out bass lessons daily at Guelph Music (located
surprisingly enough in Guelph Ontario.) It's a job he's
done with style and more than a little patience since
he was 18 years old.
Raso's debut release The Bassman Cometh, comes after
a lifetime's dedication to his instrument of choice.
Not happy with simply putting out a high-quality bit
of music, The Bassman Cometh tells the tale of The Bassman:
a comic book hero sent to earth to destroy his arch
nemesis The Anti-Groove.
No
matter what the story might be, it's the emotion and
sheer energy of the music that will have you sit up
and pay attention to Raso's tunes. Each has a life and
feel all its own with Raso switching between funk, slapping,
and more melodic methods to set the mood. Listen to
The Bassman' once, and you'll tap your foot. Listen
twice and the disc will never leave your player. One
more time around and you'll be inspired to make sweet
love, cure cancer and bring peace to the world.
Well,
maybe not. Still, it's a damn good disc.
So
much so that Raso has decided to release his second
disc: Live on Planet Bop. It's actionpacked with Raso
originals both well known and new. While Raso recorded,
produced and performed The Bassman Cometh all by his
lonesome, with his two to five-piece ensemble, he always
has more than enough company on stage. On any given
night, you'll hear selections from The Bassman Cometh,
other original compositions, and a melange of jazz,
blues, reggae and a number of surprising covers.
And
what does the future hold for Jason Raso?
Nothing
but music.
Currently,
Raso is slugging away at his third disc: Orjazzm, due
to be released by fall of 2002. The third disc you say?
Yes. Raso's second disc - Live on Planet Bop - is good
to go.
